READING BRANCH SIX BELL STRIKING COMPETITION RESULTS

St Mary Whitchurch

Saturday 13th September 2008 - at St Mary the Virgin, Whitchurch-on-Thames

The annual Reading Branch 6 bell competition took place at St Mary the Virgin, Whitchurch-on-Thames on Saturday the 13th September.

Nine teams took part this year and it was good to see so many teams of all abilities entering - including some ringers who were taking part in a striking competition for the first time.

The sun shone, perhaps unexpectedly considering the rain we have had over the past few weeks, making it possible to stand outside and listen to all the ringing.

Whitchurch ringers, led by Stephanie May, must be congratulated on the splendid tea that they laid on for participants and other friends, Well done!

The standard of ringing overall from all teams was very good considering that the Whitchurch bells are not the easiest to ring let alone strike perfectly.

The teams taking part were St Laurence, St Mary, Tilehurst, Pangbourne, Whitchurch, Shiplake, Loddon Reach(a combined team from Swallowfield and Shinfield), Caversham and St Giles. Unfortunately, Goring had to withdraw at the last minute.

The judges, Charles Botting from High Wycombe and David Cox from Egham announced their results as follows:

For the first time it is now possible to let you hear one of the teams ringing their competition piece. To listen, your PC must be able to download and play either a .WAV file or a .MP3 file using locally installed software such as Windows Media Player or similar. Most modern PC have this installed already so you should not have any problems.

The recording lasts approx 5 minutes

So congratulations to St Marys who now go forward to the Guild 6 Bell competition later this year.

Next year lets all have another go at getting the better of the St Laurence or St Mary team - they can be beaten!
